Walking Through the Living Forest

There is something different about walking beneath a forest canopy.

The air feels cooler, the ground tells its own story, and every turn brings another reminder that a forest is far more than a collection of trees. It is a living system—shaped by soil, water, plants, wildlife, people, and generations of knowledge.

During a recent walk through the forest, members of the Eastern Himalayas Collective Foundation (EHCF) spent time observing the landscape and reflecting on the extraordinary biodiversity that surrounds us.

Among the many things that make the Eastern Himalayan region special is its diversity of indigenous trees and plant life. Native species form part of complex ecological relationships that support soil health, water cycles, wildlife habitat and the wider resilience of the landscape.

For EHCF, conservation is closely connected with people and communities. Protecting biodiversity is not only about protecting forests in isolation; it is also about understanding the landscapes in which communities live, farm, travel and depend on natural resources.

A walk through the forest therefore becomes an opportunity to observe, learn and reconnect—with nature and with the knowledge that has existed within these landscapes for generations.

We believe that meaningful conservation begins with attention: taking the time to see the landscape, understand its changes, appreciate its biodiversity and recognise the value of indigenous and local knowledge.

This photograph captures a simple moment from that journey—a walk through the forest, surrounded by living diversity and the quiet strength of the Eastern Himalayan landscape.
